University of Tsukuba was selected as a core university of the Project for Establishing Core Universities for Internationalization (“Global 30″), sponsored by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology of Japan (MEXT). The project aims to produce young people who play an active role in the world with their high specialty and supports activities for reinforcing international academic interactions such as establishments of classes and educational programs provided in English, attraction of international students to Japan, establishment of better campus environment for co-existence of Japanese and international students, and strategic academic exchanges. In the year of 2009, 13 universities (7 national universities and 6 private universities) were selected as core universities including University of Tsukuba.
Within the framework, CANMRE (North African and Mediterranean Centre for Research and Education, Centre de l’Afrique du Nord et de la Méditerranée pour la Recherche et l’Enseignement) was selected as one of eight representative oversea offices of Japanese universities. The representative offices are expected to play a role as a “gateway” to all Japanese universities for students who are interested in studying in Japan. In the year 2009, eight oversea bases in Vietnam, India, Russia, Uzbekistan, Germany, Egypt and Tunisia were approved. CANMRE is expected to be in charge of attracting and supporting students in African and Mediterranean regions to study in Japan.
University of Tsukuba has emphasized academic exchange and research cooperation with North African countries, especially Tunisia. In this context, the university established the Alliance for Research on North Africa (ARENA) in 2004 as a focal point of research activities on North Africa. ARENA has a wide spectrum of research fields such as biotechnology, environmental sciences, humanities, social sciences, management, and information and communication technology. Through research cooperation with Tunisian researchers, ARENA has produced a lot of interesting research results especially in the field of biotechnology. Recently, a new joint research project with Tunisian research institutes on valorization of bioresource in semi-arid and arid regions has been approved by Japanese government.
CANMRE was established in 2006 in National Agronomic Institute of Tunisia (INAT) as the first oversea base of University of Tsukuba. It is also the first oversea office of a Japanese university in North Africa. CANMRE has contributed to academic cooperation between North African countries and University of Tsukuba by coordinating and supporting research cooperation and academic exchange. ARENA and CANMRE have also played an important role of organizing the Tunisia-Japan Symposium on Science, Society & Technology (TJASSST), which has been held every year since 2000 and will be held in November 2009 as the 10th anniversary edition. The activities of ARENA and CANMRE in Tunisia and North African region were appreciated by MEXT and therefore University of Tsukuba was selected as a core university of the “Global 30” project.
We ARENA, CANMRE and University of Tsukuba appreciate great cooperation and support by Tunisian government, universities, research institutes and individual researchers and students. We hope the approval of our university as a core university of the “Global 30” project and a representative oversea office will reinforce our academic partnership with Tunisia, North Africa and African continent.
